Benefits of Jaggery

by Dr.Jaggery Team on January 20, 2021

Popularly known as ‘gud’, ‘gur’ and ‘gul’ in North India, jaggery, which is a staple dish in villages, is medicine for some and essential ‘mukhwaas’ for others. In terms of taste and medicinal properties, nothing comes close to this sweet delight, which is created using boiled and refined sugarcane juice. Rich in minerals, low in fat, and sweeter than the sweetest sugar, jaggery is slowly finding its way to our dinner tables as a substitute for the harmful refined sugar. With each passing day, as people become more aware of its exceptional health properties and unique taste, the demand for jaggery is increasing, and increasing exponentially.

The Ayurveda, the timeless literature of Indian medicine, describes, on various occasions, the benefits of jaggery and the combinations in which it can be used to overcome diseases. The following are some select combinations that have been mentioned in the Ayurveda.

Jaggery Helps In....

Digestion: - Jaggery works as a digestive stimulant which helps in both- preventing and relieving constipation. Jaggery, when mixed with cardamom, enhances the latter’s antimicrobial activity which kills bacteria and fungi.

Cough and Cold: - Jaggery is also used as an immunity booster. When mixed with sonth, fennel, ginger and star-anise, it becomes a powerful medicinal preparation which can be used to treat colds.

Migraine: - Jaggery mixed with herbs and taken on an empty stomach in the morning can help relieve migraine.

Improving iron deficiency: - This recipe has been passed down from generation to generation in India. It is used particularly in post-natal care, after a lot of blood has been lost by the woman after delivering the baby. The said woman is fed jaggery, along with certain other herbs, to replenish the iron content in the body.

Detoxifying: - Jaggery is a natural body cleanser and offloads a lot of stress from our liver.

Purifying blood naturally: - There is no dearth of natural blood purifiers in nature, but liquid jaggery towers over all of them. It is for this very property of jaggery that it is always recommended by doctors to heart patients. Liquid jaggery is an excellent means to beat tiredness and fatigue.

The benefits mentioned above are only the tip of an iceberg, and dare I say a very large one. Jaggery is one of the healthiest sugars in the world, and we, at Dr. Jaggery, are determined to bring all varieties of jaggery to you, at the option of a simple mouse-click. We hope to be a small part of your lives, which we aim to make healthy and happy.
